How to Build in an Advantage in 2023
Developing your plan now will create asymmetric returns in the New Year
As the Holiday Season is getting into full swing, the Georgia Run-Off is over, the mid-term results are coming into focus. The question is, how does this affect you and your startup? Meanwhile, an “official” recession is waiting just around the corner. Will there be VC or LPs to fund your idea? Or will it be Uncle Sam’s unlimited credit card? The challenge as a Founder is to know the right course of action.
Assess the Situation
With Republicans taking the House and the Senate remaining in the hands of Democrats, each Chamber will have razor thin margins. Given this makeup, we can expect executive offices / Biden administration to stay on its current trajectory. Another consideration is the President preparing to announce his reelection decision. This political situation clashes with several policy realities, and more specifically, timelines. Major policy areas that will need to be resolved in the coming months are:
Debt Ceiling and the CR to ensure federal funding
Marriage, Reauthorizations to National Defense Authorization Act and the FARM Bill (AG subsidies/SNAP)
Beyond Congress, the states also highlight a new aspect where many legislative majorities actually increased. This creates opportunity as well as potential risk. Initiating a proactive Government Relations strategy now will reduce drag once the sessions begin.
Enter the Fray
That is why developing a strategic plan for 2023 is so vital. It will help filter signal from noise and identify areas of opportunity amid a political circus. What can you do now regardless of political control at the state and federal level?
Develop strategic objectives. Whether the political control changed in your venue or not, the midterms will bring about new political dynamics and issues that impact you.
Establish a policy presence. Incoming administrations and legislators will have an incredibly full plate in 2023. You must prepare and commit yourself now to achieve success.
Grow your audience. Success in the policy arena depends on bringing others to your cause. Identify synergies and allies to support your existing efforts.
